Florida Hospital Receives Largest Federal Grant in its History to Fund Education for Critical Care Nurses

Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recently awarded Florida Hospital a federal grant worth almost $1 million to establish a critical care nursing distance learning program at Florida Hospital.

This program will be available for all 17 Adventist Health System hospitals across nine counties in Florida over a three-year period.   The grant of $925,359 is the largest federal grant Florida Hospital has received to date.

The learning program, RN Critical Care Residency for Urban and Rural Hospitals, will deliver standardized adult critical care education and training online to nurses at any of the 17 Adventist Health System hospitals in Florida who want to specialize in critical care.  The distance learning component will also prepare nurses practicing at hospitals in rural geographic areas, where there is usually a lack of availability of specialty care education.  Florida Hospital is one of the few centers funded to take one this proactive project underscoring the hospital’s overall commitment to nursing excellence.

“Through this project, Florida Hospital and Adventist Health System will strengthen its capacity to educate and retain more registered nurses to meet our state’s increasing need for healthcare services for its rapidly growing and aging population,” said Debbie Pusateri, MSN, RN, assistant vice president of critical care and nursing resources at Florida Hospital.

Curriculum for the program is currently being finalized by Florida Hospital, and enrollment is expected to begin in January 2008.
