Local clergy, parish nurses, physicians and community members gathered at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, A f Florida Hospital, on March 11, to listen and learn from Dr. Harold G. Koenig, director of Duke University’s Center for the Study of Religion/Spirituality & Health.

Dr. Koenig’s message included the importance of the role that faith plays in healthcare, the intersection of spirituality and healthcare, how ministers and physicians can collaborate on caring for the whole person – mind, body and spirit, as well as the overall effects of religion on a person’s health.

“After hearing Dr. Koenig’s insight into the importance of whole-person health, I know that Florida Hospital is ahead of the curve with the way we deliver healthcare,” said Ken Bradley, administrator for Winter Park Memorial Hospital. “The way that our physicians are collaborating with our chaplains to provide mind, body and spiritual healing, exemplifies how we are following Florida Hospital’s mission, which is to ‘Extend the healing ministry of Christ’.”

After Dr. Koenig addressed a group of local clergy and community members, he joined Winter Park Memorial Hospital medical staff for a special dinner event. During the event Dr. Koenig stated, “I can see that Florida Hospital takes this topic seriously, and that is very encouraging. The chaplains and physicians I have talked to are dedicated to integrating spirituality into healthcare, and I believe that will only continue to improve the overall healing process for their patients.”
