Florida Hospital Names Chief Academic Officer
Friday August 17, 2007
Florida Hospital has appointed Joseph Portoghese, M.D., Chief Academic Officer of Florida Hospital. Dr. Portoghese will lead Florida Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education programs on its seven Central Florida campuses, overseeing the academic quality, structure and performance of the residency programs and fellowships.

“Dr. Portoghese is a superb clinician who has done a great job structuring and implementing the General Surgery Residency Program at Florida Hospital. As a previous president of the medical staff at Florida Hospital and current program director for the General Surgery Residency Program, he has a great depth of knowledge,” said David Moorhead, M.D., chief medical officer of Florida Hospital.
The position of Chief Academic Officer was created because of the growth of Florida Hospital’s residency programs. Florida Hospital currently operates residencies in Allopathic Family Medicine, Osteopathic Family Medicine including Neuro-Musculoskeletal Medicine, Podiatry, and General Surgery, as well as fellowships in Geriatrics, Obstetrics, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Gynecologic Oncology.
“Florida Hospital’s residency programs increase the supply of physicians to Central Florida, creating more access for the community. I look forward to growing the residency opportunities even more, especially as we look forward to additional medical students coming to the area,” Dr. Portoghese said.
Opened in 1908, Florida Hospital is one of the largest not-for-profit hospitals in the country, caring for more than a million patients per year – that’s more than any other hospital in the country, according to the American Hospital Association. The more than 1,900-bed system, comprised of seven hospitals and 16 Centra Care locations, has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best hospitals in the country for the past nine years.
