Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences Friday April 7, 2006
Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences (FHCHS) commemorated the past and celebrated the future in a special ceremony.
Administration, faculty, staff, and Florida Hospital staff helped the initial demolition of the old dormitory building by throwing rocks at the structure before a bulldozer, driven by FHCHS President David Greenlaw, began tearing it down. The demolition comes as FHCHS prepares for the opening of the new Campus Center that will be dedicated on April 19.
As they prepared for the future, College officials also took the time to commemorate the past. Dr. Greenlaw opened a time capsule from 1953, when the building was the nursing department and a housing facility for students. Inside they found a complete handwritten list of all of the employees of the Florida Sanitarium and Hospital dated March 24, 1953. Also documented are the names of General and Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventist representatives, Board of Trustees representatives, and the Nursing School Committee.
“Opening the time capsule from 1953 allowed us to take a moment to reflect on the College’s past as we head into a new era in the College,” Greenlaw said. “Yesterday’s ceremony marked a very important milestone for Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences.”
The College opened in 1992 with 243 students. Today, the student body is made up of more than 2,000 students.
