WHAT: Florida Hospital and the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine will officially sign an affiliation agreement this Friday, June 24, in Puerto Rico. This affiliation will allow students from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine the opportunity to do rotations at Florida Hospital as part of their medical school training. Students will have the option to come to Florida Hospital for four weeks during their junior year for a required Family Medicine rotation. “This additional training will give the University of Puerto Rico Medical School students a diverse experience, while increasing their options for required or elective experience,” said Dr. Kris Gray, Florida Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program Director.
The affiliation agreement is taking place during the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce’s Convención 2005, titled “Minds Without Frontiers” to be held June 23-26. “It is our hope that the partnership that Florida Hospital and the University of Puerto Rico Medical School has developed will become a model for other Central Florida businesses,“ said Jacob Stuart, President Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce. “As we further develop the relationship between the Central Florida and Puerto Rican business communities, we hope additional organizations will reach out to the Hispanic population and develop similar relationships to that of Florida Hospital and the University of Puerto Rico.”
“We are excited about the opportunity to lead out on this important initiative with the Hispanic community,” said Des Cummings, Executive Vice President Florida Hospital. “In the future, we anticipate this program to grow with opportunities for students to attend rotations in areas such as emergency medicine and surgery.”
WHEN: On June 24 at 4 p.m. representatives from Florida Hospital, the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, and the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce will officially sign the affiliation agreement.
