He might not wear a Magic jersey anymore, but Darrell Armstrong still has a special place in his heart for Orlando. And now the basketball superstar is leaving another legacy in the city beautiful, by adding his own touch to a renovated waiting room at the Darrell Armstrong Child Development Center (DACDC) at Florida Hospital East Orlando.
On Monday, July 12, Darrell Armstrong visited with the volunteers working on the waiting room, and helped to lay flooring. It's all part of an “extreme makeover” that will take the waiting room from drab to dazzling. When the project is complete, families visiting the DACDC at Florida Hospital East Orlando, which serves children and families affected by premature birth, will enjoy a bright, fun, basketball-themed waiting area complete with murals and a basketball court floor. The grand opening of the new waiting room will be celebrated in September, when Darrell Armstrong hosts a weekend of celebrity sporting events in Orlando to raise money for the Darrell Armstrong Foundation for Premature Babies.
The renovation of the waiting room is being made possible by many generous donations. Lowe’s is donating the paint and materials, artists Alfonso Rodriguez and James Mylett are donating their time and talent to paint the murals, Thomas Ruff is donating the furniture, and the Sons of Thunder, Inc., an organization for inner city young men, is helping with the flooring. The DACDC opened one year ago at Florida Hospital East Orlando thanks to a $250,000 grant from the Darrell Armstrong Foundation for Premature Babies.
