Neurosurgeon Carlos Briceńo, MD, lives in Panama and though he had been trained on the delicate procedure, he had never observed a case. Recently, he came to Florida Hospital Celebration Health to watch Neurosurgeon Ali Chahlavi remove an intradural tumor and stabilize the neck with small surgical screws.
“People suffering with intradural tumors often experience a great deal of pain, tingling, and numbness in the arms. It takes quite a bit of skill and training to first get into the dural sac and secondly remove the tumor. But what is new about the way this procedure will now be able to be done in Panama, is the ability to stabilize the neck with screws instead of placing the patient in a hard cervical collar or stabilizing the neck with wires. I am happy to be able to share the technique with Dr. Briceńo and hope that many people in Panama will benefit from this procedure,” said Ali Chahlavi, MD.
When Dr. Briceńo returns to Panama, he will be the first neurosurgeon in his country to offer the technique.
“As neurosurgeons, it is so important for us to share our knowledge and skill with each other. My patients will benefit from the cases I have observed at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. In the future, I hope to continue to share training techniques that will ultimately improve outcomes for patients,” said Dr. Briceńo, MD.
