Florida Hospital Celebration Health Gynecologist Steven McCarus, M.D. is now performing the new Essure procedure on patients. This non-incisional surgical procedure involves placing a small, flexible spring like device (called a micro-insert) into each fallopian tube. The inserts are made from polyester fibers and metals — which have been used in the heart and other parts of the body for many years. Over a period of three months, body tissue grows into the inserts, which blocks the fallopian tubes and prevents pregnancy.
“This is a wonderful option for permanent birth control and is yielding very high patient satisfaction,” said Dr. McCarus. “I am thrilled to be able to provide patients with the latest and greatest minimally invasive techniques.”
It only takes about 15 minutes to perform the Essure procedure and it can be done without general anesthesia. Women are discharged about 45 minutes after the procedure, which is followed by minimal pain and a quick recovery.
Sherry Pascual, 43, was one of the first Central Florida residents to have the procedure done. “I did not have any problems at all and was actually able to return to work the following day,” said Pascual. “I experienced very little discomfort and would definitely recommend it to people who don’t want to get pregnant. ”
Dr. McCarus is currently training doctors on this procedure. He is the Chief of the Division of Gynecologic Endoscopic Surgery and Medical Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Florida Hospital Celebration Health Women’s Center. During the past 10 years, he has trained several gynecologists and surgeons on endoscopy procedures.
