It’s her worst nightmare… the loud alarm goes off on the baby’s heart monitor signaling that the little one-pound infant is in immediate trouble. Damaris Cruz, RN races to the baby’s dimly lit isolate and raises the blanket that rests over the top. She carefully lifts the tiny, frail body that is covered with tubes and wires and to her relief, she sees that the baby had simply wiggled loose from the sensor monitor, which set off the alarm. The baby is fine… for now.
Neonatal nurses face this type of situation everyday. Caring for more than 800 babies a year, Florida Hospital NICU nurses know what it’s like to work under pressure. Parents trust these nurses to delicately care for their tiny infants – barely the size of a stick of butter - as they nurse them back to health. It is for these reasons, that we celebrate National Neonatal Nurses Day.
“Caring for one-pound babies is just part of my job,” said Cruz. “There are so many aspects to being a neonatal nurse, and each one is challenging, yet extremely rewarding.”
