Child Life Specialists at Florida Children’s Hospital Make Hospital Stays Extra Special for Pediatric Patients

During Child Life month, these healthcare heroes are celebrated, and now they’re turning the tables and making this week extra special for their patients.

WHAT:   Going to the hospital can be stressful and intimidating, especially for children, but thanks to the dedicated Child Life Specialists at Florida Children’s Hospital, things are easier for these little patients.  From providing therapeutic play and preparing children for medical procedures, to supporting families during challenging events, Child Life Specialists are there for these patients each day.  During Child Life month, these healthcare heroes are celebrated, and now they’re turning the tables and making this week extra special for their patients.  Throughout the week, they will be dressing up in fun themes; educating patients, staff, and family; and of course cheering up our littlest patients, all in celebration of Child Life month.

Monday, March 5, the Child Life Specialists will host Kid’s Clinic where nurses will become patients, and the patients, doctors!  These little doctors – donning scrubs and masks - will monitor their patients’ heartbeats, bandage their imaginary wounds, and take their blood pressure – everything they have to go through while in the hospital.

Tuesday, March 6, Child Life keeps the fun going with Sports Day.  There will be fun sporting games in the playroom with prizes and even a basketball shooting contest with Stuff from the Orlando Magic.  Staff will be showing off their spirit and dressing in their favorite team gear.

Things get even wackier on Wednesday, March 7, when PJ the clown joins in the fun.  He will be face painting with the children and helping them decorate wacky socks.

Hawaiian music, ice cream, and leis making will end the week’s festivities on Friday, February 9.

BACKGROUND: Florida Children’s Hospital is a 138 specialty bed “hospital within a hospital” that allows Florida Hospital to deliver a complete range of dedicated pediatric health services to younger patients, who benefit from the expertise of specialized departments throughout the hospital.  Florida Children’s Hospital is served by Kids’ Docs – the largest panel of Pediatric specialists in Orlando.  More than 50,000 children are seen annually, and one of every two Central Florida residents chooses Florida Hospital as their health care provider.
