Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) Update

April 4, 2005 Florida Secretary of Health John O. Agwunobi, M.D., M.B.A., M.P.H. is coming to the Florida Children’s Hospital to visit with patients who have been diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). During the visit, Dr. Agwunobi will also visit with staff from the Florida Children’s Hospital. The Florida Children’s Hospital currently has two pediatric patients being treated for HUS. Both patients remain in critical condition. A household contact of a confirmed pediatric HUS case remains in the hospital and is listed in fair condition. In addition, Florida Hospital continues to treat one adult patient for HUS. The adult patient is in fair condition. Dr. Mehul Dixit, Florida Children’s Hospital pediatric nephrologist, is the physician treating the pediatric patients and is serving as the spokesperson on the HUS cases for Florida Hospital. Friday, April 1, 2005 at 9 a.m. Florida Hospital has no changes or updates regarding any of the HUS cases. At this point, no more updates will be given unless there is a significant change. Thursday, March 31, 2005 Florida Hospital has no changes or updates regarding any of the HUS cases. Wednesday, March 30, 2005 Florida Hospital has no changes or updates regarding any of the HUS cases. Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 11:15 a.m. Florida Children’s Hospital continues to treat two remaining pediatric patients for HUS. These two patients remain in critical condition. In addition, a household contact of a confirmed HUS case remains in the hospital on dialysis and is listed in fair condition. Florida Hospital continues to treat one adult patient for HUS. The adult patient remains in serious condition. Monday, March 28, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. Florida Hospital continues to treat one adult patient for HUS. The adult patient remains in serious condition. All other patients being treated or monitored for HUS have been discharged. We have no new cases of HUS to report. We do not anticipate giving any more formal press briefings or updates at this time. Friday, March 25, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. Florida Children’s Hospital is currently treating five pediatric patients for HUS. Two remain in critical condition. One has been upgraded to serious, one has been upgraded to fair, and one upgraded to good. Florida Hospital continues to treat one adult patient for HUS who remains in serious condition. In addition, three household contacts of known pediatric cases of HUS are being closely monitored. They include a sibling and grandparent of one confirmed pediatric case and a grandparent of ANOTHER confirmed pediatric case. Finally, there were three pediatric patients at Florida Hospital Altamonte who did not meet the HUS criteria but were being watched closely out of an abundance of caution. These patients have now been released from the hospital. Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 11 a.m. One adult patient at Florida Hospital Orlando is in serious condition and being treated for HUS. There are 2 other suspected cases of HUS. One is the sibling of a confirmed pediatric case and the other is a grandparent of the same confirmed case. Neither of these cases have been confirmed, but are suspected. The sibling has been admitted to Florida Hospital Orlando and the grandparent is at Florida Hospital Altamonte. In addition, there are 3 pediatric patients being monitored at Florida Hospital Altamonte. These patients do not meet the HUS criteria, however in an abundance of caution, they are being closely watched. Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at 11 a.m. |
