WHAT: Cancer has hit close to home for students at Andover Elementary School, and now the students are striving to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. These students, aged first grade to fifth grade, are making hats for patients at Florida Hospital Cancer Institute after seeing their teacher, Lorna Betteridge, battle breast cancer. Betteridge has undergone chemotherapy and radiation, which has caused her to lose her hair. Each day, the students would see her in special hats to cover her head, and they are hoping to provide similar hats to other patients who may need them.
Andover Elementary School has purchased looms and yarn to help these students with their project. To date, they have made approximately 50 hats. Be there on Tuesday, July 31, as one of Betteridge’s caregivers comes to the school to officially accept these hand-made hats on behalf of the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute.
